Data Governance

What is Data Governance?

Data Governance is the organization of authority and control over data assets that ensures that data assets are accurate, consistent, understandable and that the access rights and authority are defined, applied and understood by the university community.

Goals and Objectives

  • Develop a data governance strategy to serve as the guiding principles, values and high level directional goals for the usage and management of university data assets
  • Establish comprehensive and consistent regulations, procedures and standards across NC State to advance data governance adoption and practice
  • Promote effective and consistent stewardship of university data assets 
  • Institute clear rules for authorization and access to safeguard sensitive data
  • Support and maintain the university data catalog, which serves as a central repository of information on university data assets and analytics products and helps minimize conflicting interpretations of data elements
  • Improve the quality, accuracy and consistency of university data assets
  • Promote data literacy, awareness and appropriate usage of data resources across the university community
