Data Hierarchy and Organization

The Hierarchy of University Data

University Data at NC State are organized into hierarchical groupings of data (Figure 1) for the purpose of assigning accountability and responsibility to data. The highest level of University Data are called data domains which are based on the various subject matters relating to large scale university operations, though they may be organized differently than the organizational structures within NC State. These data domains are further broken down into granular subsets called data categories, which assist with more clearly defining what data makes up each data domain and help organize data by specific security, privacy, regulatory, legal or operational considerations. Finally at the most granular level are the data elements which are the most basic unit of data and represent a specific characteristic, measurement or attribute of an entity.
