Data Managers
Data managers are individuals who are delegated specific data management responsibilities concerning data elements within the data category(ies) assigned by their data steward.

Responsibilities
- Confirming that the use of data by software, applications and tools has been approved by applicable data steward(s) and has undergone appropriate business, compliance, security and accessibility reviews
- Working in conjunction with OIT to define appropriate security controls (roles, permissions, etc.) for designated data
- Managing, testing and improving safeguards or countermeasures that protect data in order to maintain appropriate levels of confidentiality, integrity and availability
- Providing interpretations of associated data retention policies for designated data
- Ensuring data quality (accuracy, completeness and consistency) and data integrity (ensuring it remains accurate and reliable throughout its lifecycle including storage, processing and transmission) for designated data
- Developing and managing business processes that meet the data protection requirements for the classification level of data involved
- Serving/consulting on data-related projects, initiatives or steering teams
- Designating data custodians as applicable to support the University Data Governance Program
- Participating in related audits as necessary
- Serving as the primary point of contact and coordination for data governance related issues within their data category(ies)
The following responsibilities may be delegated to data managers by the applicable data steward.
- Approving access to protected data within the category, determining the degree of user access to data (create, read, write, delete) and periodically reviewing authorizations
- Defining or describing data and initiating requests to modify university data definitions under their respective oversight
- Implementing and enforcing data-related policies, regulations, rules, procedures and standards within the data category
- Ensuring compliance with applicable external requirements that impact the data category
- Reviewing University Data Catalog documentation for enterprise analytics products (i.e. dashboards and reports) for the appropriateness of designated data access details and data classification for enterprise analytic products that use data from their data category
